ECD 6 and 7

The electronics enthusiast's product design cycle

Earlier versions could be made to run on Linux, some better than others. However, ECD 6 and ECD 7 cannot be made to run on Linux, even using Wine.

I think the problem is a lack of .NET, as trying to install it brings up a Mono startup cursor. That fades without a window appearing or installation taking place. I have tried to install the .NET stuff on the CD in Wine for ECD 6, but it does not help.

In view of the many Linux based projects, including Android, appearing in Elektor and with the advent of the Raspberry Pi as an economical development platform for Elektor readers, the ECD series should at least run in Wine.

I appreciate that there is pressure to use .NET for Windows based programs, but I think that is short-sighted when Mono is no longer supported and was limited in the support it gives for .NET programs. With the advent of Windows 8, Windows will be a poor development platform for us hobbyists.

Good news, everyone!

The answer to installing ECD 6 and 7 is to open the installation file with Wine and not allow Mono to have a go at it. Because the program minimises to desktop, it is also necessary to configure Wine to run in a desktop window, otherwise you only get one tool per launch.
