Screws, Nuts and Washers

The electronics enthusiast's product design cycle

Postby eddie » Sat Dec 18, 2010 12:00 am

Hi

When fitting a motherboard the other day I noticed that only a screws was used to tighten down onto the board. I was always taught that you should have some form of locking mechanism i.e. a crinkle washer underneath the screw to stop it coming loose. Also on the case there is just the self tapping screw holding the cover on. It has got me thinking, I have looked in the Ray Skipp workmanship manuals and that is recommending locking mechanism when tightening nuts and bolts etc. Anyone have any opinions?

I don't really think locking screws/washers are necessary:

1) There is not significant vibration in the case that might make them work loose, I mean not like you have in a car, on an industrial machine, or a portable device.

2) And if per chance one did, its not a real safety hazard. In that the mains power supply is enclosed separately so a loose screw couldn't fall into a high voltage circuit.
