Need help ID'ing IC for PCB software

Hey folks!

I'm new, so please be gentle...

I got this crazy idea that I might be able to design a circuit for something I'd like to do.

The chip I'd like to use is an odd package and I can't find any details on it, except for what I received from the New Old Stock re-seller. Here's what he gave me:

Looking down at the chip flat it is 25mm wide x 23 mm high. Sitting on the pins, brings the chip 12mm off the surface. Pins extend about 4mm below the base of the chip. Pins are space about 2.5mm. Dip 16 at about 28mm between each row of pins.





Does anybody know what 'package' I would specify in a PCB Design Software? I tried Pad2Pad and PCB123, but was unable to determine the correct chip.

Barring that, I guess I'll need to figure out how to manually enter the 'footprint'

I think it is a reed relays from Datron. Similar an SM-C-500284 http://www.parttarget.com/5945-00-727-0479_5945007270479_2B-1518.html/-10224BB5-225F-41EF-AB74-A92BCE26078A. I think the dimensions are the same like DIL 16 0,1" pitch but a wide of 1,10" = 27,94mm. Not so difficult to draw in a PCB program like Eagle.

It's definitely Reed Relays. Four of them, actually.

I haven't used Eagle, yet, but did find what appears to be a 'free' copy. I'll get it installed and try it out.

I had briefly tried to add a 'footprint' in both of the two programs listed above. I suppose that that all seems to be fairly straight-forward.

Does

actually translate to direct info that would be entered in Eagle?

I guess I'm hoping that if I can add the 'package' as a known size, that would be the most accurate.

I know for this chip that 'knowing' the pin-out isn't likely to happen, but is that too much to hope for with other, better known, chips? Where the 'nets' are added automatically?

OK...so I looked at adding a "footprint" for that chip in Eagle and I didn't make ANY progress.

Could anybody give me a leg up on getting started?

In P2P and 123, adding a footprint was fairly obvious, but in Eagle, I can't even find a starting point...

Not having the correct footprint for the IC to be used is the first fence that I usually fall at when using PCB CAD software.
Since I usually only want to make one small board (today please) faffing about with auto routing can waste an awful lot of time.
Having mastered the art of 'free hand' or 'on the fly' pcb design, which doesn't require known footprints, I now don't do it any other way.
The schematic can remain on the back of the fag packet, and you just wade straight in.
I don't know how amenable Eagle is to this technique as I use FreePCB, which is.
To get your footprint just place individual pads in the correct place and join them to the other pads on the board manually.
Remember to put everything onto the same net, if you can, as this makes editing so much easier.
You won't get any auto checking if you go this route, but for small pcbs it works fine.
Extracting artwork from your software that is suitable for home UV exposure, ie with a sufficiently dense print onto the transparent film, is not straight forward, but is easy once you know how.
