OBD Analyser NG

OBD, CAN, EV, RV

Postby jeffj » Wed Nov 18, 2009 12:00 am

Put the kit together today, no problems just followed the instructions.
The most difficult part was fitting the display (the legs are long and on mine bent at funny angles) take your time with this. Time to build around 2 hours.

Must have a good temperature controlled soldering iron with a small tip.

Did it work?

Yes, plugged it in to the car, ran automatic connection, it connected and all the functions worked.

Very pleased!

I agree with jeffj that you need a small tip to mount the ARM SMB to the mainboard - I had to grind my soldering tip down to a needle-sharp point! I am hoping that this has kept the temperature down at the joint.
I haven't got this going yet, as I need to find a "tame" customer car to try it out upon, but it seems straightforward enough.
Has anyone found a manual that could be downloaded on the use of this handheld device, or is it supposed to be self-explanatory when the scan is initiated?

Further to my reply above, I have tested the unit out on a "tame" customer, but he doesn't know as-yet ;>
The software as-delivered is spot-on for the job I completed. It linked first time of trying under "automatic protocol" to communicate with an MG_Rover 1.4 petrol (2002MY ZR) fitted with (I think) the Rover MEMS controller (but could be Siemens 2000).
The handling of freeze-frame data, sensor data, and fault clearance was perfect. In fact, I have used professional development tools in the OEM trade that are far worse for reliability. This tool, as it stands "out-of-the-box" represent good value for money.

Hi,

I posted a question in a sister forum on this project. However, I guess you guys are the experts to answer my question?

Do I need both the 090451-71 and 090451-73? See: http://www.elektor.com/forum/elektor-forums/general-all-other-articles/my-circuit-does-not-work-%28yet%29!/odb-analyser-ng-%28sept-2009%29.1501278.lynkx

I purchased a 'Talk to my car' OBD analyser today for my KIA RIO - a brilliant car that underperforms so that it is impossible to blow up the engine!

Cost £80 (The analyser, not the car) and worth every penny.I contacted my KIA local dealer and they charge £80 for a diagnostic check. They use a £20,000 OBD alalyser - I told them that I do not have a Formula 1 car that does 10 miles/Gallon.!

I would be interested to find-out the exact model of the analyser from "Talk to my Car" - I have a big problem connecting with a Kia Rio at the moment!!! Does the analyser have any ABS functionality, or is this just EOBD? It seems that Kia Rio's were launched onto the market with the sole purpose of making money at Kia dealerships when the ABS fails - frequently.....

Hi all,

Not sure what the netiquette for this forum is? Should I be adding to this thread or starting a new topic?

I would like to ask a question, if I may?
What is this for?

It is not mentioned in the magazine article and as far as I can see has no function!

Re Martin's question above:
I reckon this is just a piece of plastic to insulate the head of the screw and prevent a short between the two small passive components nearby.

I also have a question of my own:
I'm looking for more information on the USB expansion option for this product. Has anyone implemented this?

P.S. I'm aware of the Bluetooth expansion option from the April 2010 magazine. But I would prefer USB.

P.P.S. Is the Elektor forum still maintained? I was surprised to find only 3 "Recent Main Projects and Articles", and no other threads for articles from 2009 or 2010.

Also re. Martin's question, I had a look around this area when I put my analyser together, and indeed it does just look like a bit of insulation. The passive components on my board did look quite close to shorting metalwork. It also occurred to me that the plastic would serve as a buffer to circuit board movement if the unit was dropped in service.

I would also love to find-out if anyone has implemented the USB expansion option. In fact, it would be good if a few like-minded people got together through this forum for the OBD Analyser, as I reckon that it has got plenty more potential yet. In particular, has anyone experimented with the software development yet?

Thank you both for coming back and clearing up that confusion for me.

Yes, I can add my vote to a USB interface.

And yes, I'm happy to keep this topic going - there are at least four of us - I guess that constitutes a quorum?

Re: Rovermaniac's question on software development. I have used the Eclipse IDE for several years to do Java programming. I noted (somewhere) that there is an AVR plugin for Eclipse. I'll have look about and report back.

That route may also answer my next question? I'll try and start a new thread. If I don't have permission to do that, I'll be back.
