Readers wishing to reprogram the firmware to suit individual requirements should be able to reprogram the Reader. Firmware reprogramming is also required when an update is available on the Elektor Electronics website. Firmware reprogramming requires a program called FlashMagic which may be found at

The settings shown below should be used. Check this carefully.
Install jumpers JP1 and JP2 on the board and select the right COM port. Next, click on the Start button. Normally, this should result in the firmware being reprogrammed.
The final check is for the correct quartz crystal frequency. Both jumpers should still be fitted at this stage. Click on Device Configuration and check if the configuration shown below has been programmed.
If the crystal is set to Internal the Reader will be able to read RFID cards but USB connectivity to the PC is lost.
