Deterioration of Semiconductors esp FET's at RF

The radio-active topic

Postby steve_withnell » Sun Jan 27, 2013 12:00 am

I'd always thought of solid state devices as being "digital" - "working" or "not working". Very recently I've started renovating an old solid state transceiver, and the service manual calls out "deterioration" as a problem in mixers and rf amps. In this particular radio the affected devices are 3sk41, 3sk22's FETs.

The symptom of this deterioration is described as low sensitivity on receive, either for reasons of reduced gain in amplifiers or reduced output from oscillators.

Can anyone point me at "accessible" papers I can read to more fully understand this issue?

As a specific point - should I start to treat FET's as I would old valves? ie test and replace if necessary?

Many thanks

Steve
