Soldering rework or reflow oven?

The electronics enthusiast's product design cycle

Postby mikeh » Fri Sep 25, 2009 12:00 am

I want to upgrade from Soldering iron my electronic projects.
As I also repair Laptops and Xbox's etc i need something that i can ideally use in my repair business. A lot of the work will be reflowing graphics/and processor chips. As i am a poor student i can only afford either a reflow oven or a bga/smd infrared IRDA soldering station?

Your help will be greatly appreciated

I'm amazed! You're a poor student, but you are repairing X-Box's and Laptops? Where do you source the replacement graphics and processor chips from etc?

Anyway, I used to repair laptops for a living several years ago, and from experience a reflow oven will be no good to you. You need a rework hot air station. Goodness knows what they cost with all the different size heads, but you're going to have to go to a professional outlet for that. And its likely to be a full time job perfecting BGA replacement processes. You'll also need a chip baking oven to ensure moisture retention doesn't pop your chips while soldering them.
